Downtown Austin Alliance board and staff members joined local officials today to kick off the construction of Housing First Oak Springs, a 50-unit apartment community developed by Integral Care. Downtown Austin Alliance was the first private sector contributor to the Housing First Oak Springs capital campaign. Our $150,000 contribution in November 2015 was made in the form of a challenge grant that helped generate an additional $150,000 in private funding.
Unlike any other apartment project in Austin, Oak Springs will provide Housing First for people who are chronically homeless. Housing First is an evidence-based practice that cities across the country are implementing to address the needs of people who have been homeless for long periods of time and who have behavioral or physical health issues. As the term implies, Housing First provides housing as the first step to address a person’s condition of homelessness; then pairs it with supportive services that help keep people housed.
Housing First Oak Springs is located near the intersection of Airport Blvd. and Oak Springs Road. The $17 million project will include 50 fully-furnished single occupancy efficiency apartments, an integrated health clinic offering primary care and behavioral health services, a community room, supportive employment, outdoor exercise space, computer lab, vertical gardens and more. Integral Care will own and operate the project.
Housing First Oak Springs is scheduled to open in the fall of 2019. More information on this project and Integral Care is available here.
