In March and April 2017, XYZ Atlas: Congress Avenue, an interactive public art project, was installed at the intersection of Congress Avenue and Cesar Chavez in the heart of downtown. XYZ Atlas asks why we feel a sense of belonging to a place by mapping experiences and collecting stories that document our highs and lows. Through an event at 800 Congress and an online survey, the project collected the experiences of 343 participants. Learn more about the project in the new video and see a sampling of the results in the digital catalog.
The results of this project also help inform the stakeholder engagement process of the Congress Avenue Urban Design Initiative, a project by the City of Austin that will create an urban design and implementation strategy for Congress Avenue.
Commissioned by the Downtown Austin Alliance, XYZ Atlas: Congress Avenue was a Heart of the Community project, in partnership with Project for Public Spaces, supported by a grant from Southwest Airlines. The XYZ Atlas is a Fisterra Project, an arts nonprofit lead by artist Jennifer Chenoweth.
