Austin Film Society Presents FREE Outdoor Film Series @ Republic Square Park: Dirt Road To Psychedelia

8:00 PM

Republic Square Park - 4th and Guadalupe
Paige Swift (paigeswift@gmail.com)

A folk-singing Janis Joplin, the dawning of the Thirteenth Floor Elevators and the first psychedelic venue in Austin, Texas created a fertile ground for the emerging counter culture of the 1960s. Seen as nonconformists, Beatnik-inspired hipsters were drawn together by folk, country and blues music. Traditional values became challenged as they sought a lifestyle outside of the system. Civil Rights and the war in Vietnam were galvanizing factors in 1960s American society, but the advent of psychedelics made it electrified. This documentary, by local filmmaker Scott Conn, tells how it all happened in Austin, Texas. Includes vintage footage of our beloved downtown historic parks as sites for love-ins and political rallies. 13th Floor Elevators tribute band, Tommy Hall Schedule, opens at 7.

Indoor air can be much more toxic than the air we experience outdoors, but isn't regulated by any agency. Where do these toxins come from? How well do air filters or ozone generators clean indoor air? Students, teachers, families, and the general public are invited to attend an evening of scientific exploration as the Environmental Science Institute at UT Austin presents “Is Your House Killing You?” by Dr. Richard Corsi, indoor air quality researcher at The University of Texas at Austin. Join us as Dr. Corsi answers these questions and shows us how some very common (and presumably safe) products that we use in our homes present challenges to maintaining healthy indoor air quality.

Make sure to come early to experience exhibits and activities presented by our partners! Free refreshments will be provided. K-12 teachers are also invited to join us for a free workshop and pizza before the event, tailored to provide background useful for the classroom. The University of Texas Department of Theatre & Dance opens the 2008-2009 Season with ‘In-Repertory,’ featuring two new works by University of Texas students.

410 [GONE], directed by Charlie Otte, is a poignant look at a young woman’s attempt to understand her brother’s suicide. Born in America of Asian parents, she and her brother live in a world that is both old and new – Eastern and Western – and his death precipitates a look not only into family relationships, but an investigation into cultural and historical assumptions about life and death. Sad, funny, literary and slapstick, the play mixes styles and conventions to create a universal landscape where ancient Chinese myth meets modern technology. Chinese Gods and modern-day Asian Americans meet in a hi-tech Chinese Land of the Dead, where prayers are answered via internet or cell phone and Tai Chi mixes with Dance Dance Revolution to form a new ritual. For additional information on 410 [GONE] please visit http://www.finearts.utexas.edu/tad/productions/production_season/2008-2009/410_gone/index.cfm.

An alcoholic middle-aged man, Cahit Tomruk, has stripped himself of all vestiges of his Turkish roots, but when he realizes he is left with nothing, he determines suicide is his way out of depression. As with so many things, he fails and ends up in rehab, where he meets Sibel, another suicidal Turkish-German. The younger woman sees something in Cahit we can’t – a means of escaping her conservative family. She proposes they get married – in name only – and live together. This seems to be a good deal for both – he gets a clean apartment, she gets freedom, but an almost inevitable love complicates and sweetens the arrangement. -- Chale Nafus, Director of Programming, Austin Film Society

“The film questions how we elect our political leaders by showing that candidates with access to power and money have significant advantages over any contenders, regardless of their abilities. It shows what confronts fresh political faces with new ideas and passionate supporters when they go head-to-head against a political system that maintains power by manipulating a largely apathetic electorate. As a result, we tend to elect brand-name politicians despite their obvious shortcomings. The film offers an unvarnished look at the inside of what national pundits called one of 2004's surprising campaigns. And the film asks if it is still possible in America for voters excited by a person's ideas and ability to get involved in the political process and elect a candidate who has not sold out, or bought into the existing political establishment” [official website]

Gilda, a lovely young commercial artist, enters their lives and their hearts and brings them success. Amazingly, the ménage a trois manages to work out the kinks in their complicated relationship – even after Gilda marries her stodgy boss. This decidedly pre-Code comedy got onto American screens right before the Hollywood censors cracked down on a whole host of representations of “immorality.”

Sep 28-Jan 18 The New York Graphic Workshop: 1964 - 1970

The New York Graphic Workshop: 1964 - 1970

Blanton Museum of Art
Brady Dyer

http://www.blantonmuseum.org

This exhibition is the first comprehensive presentation of a crucial, yet little-known, episode in the history of American and Latin American Conceptual art. Showcasing over 100 prints, drawings and mixed media works, the exhibition will explore contributions made to the Conceptualist movement of the 60’s and 70’s through the printmaking of the The New York Graphic Workshop (NYGW). The NYGW was founded in 1964 by three young Latin American artists in New York - Luis Camnitzer, José Guillermo Castillo, and Liliana Porter - whose mission was to redefine the practice of printmaking in conceptual terms, focusing on the mechanical and repetitive nature of printmaking, rather than its traditional techniques.

Sep 28-Jan 18 Reimagining Space: The Park Place Gallery Group in 1960s New York

Reimagining Space: The Park Place Gallery Group in 1960s New York

Blanton Museum of Art
Brady Dyer

www.blantonmuseum.org

The Park Place Gallery was a prominent artist’s cooperative space in 1960s New York, shared by five sculptors (Mark di Suvero, Peter Forakis, Robert Grosvenor, Anthony Magar, and Forrest Myers) and five painters (Dean Fleming, Tamara Melcher, David Novros, Edwin Ruda, and Leo Valledor). With their unique interest in dynamic, complex space in sculpture and painting and their active engagement with contemporary cultural issues, the group was often at odds with the predominant movements and philosophies of most artists of the day. As a result, Park Place has rarely been treated in histories of the 1960s. By assembling a selection of major works rarely seen or seen together since that era--as well as photographs and documents chronicling the group’s activities--this exhibition opens a new window on the 1960s art world. In doing so, it reveals the decade to have been a period of much richer artistic possibility and complexity than standard art historical narratives ever suggest.
