Nov 11 The Co-Conspirator Fundraiser

6:30 PM - 9:00 PM

Scottish Rite Theatre, 207 West 18th Street

(512) 891-7703
www.kdhdance.com

If you haven’t yet attended one of their annual fundraisers, here’s what to expect. In the foyer, you can register to win one of our three door prizes, watch a dance video, and fill your plate from the colorful buffet of exquisite hors d’oeuvres and desserts. Turn the corner and buy a raffle ticket or two. Liaison Resources has donated two iPod Nanos. That’s two chances to win! Follow the twinkling lights and you’ll see a long table covered with artwork, theme baskets and individual items. That’s the silent auction. Make the rounds, sign a few bid sheets, and then let the sound of live music lure you into the theatre. Once inside, stop off at the bar and select beer, wine or a non-alcoholic beverage. Enjoy the music and maybe show off a step or two of your own on the dance floor. Visit with the dancers, then find a seat and feel the anticipation grow as door prize winners are announced throughout the evening, and then again as the silent auction draws to a close. When the theater darkens, sit back and watch a world premiere performance by the critically-acclaimed modern dance company. Our audiences have come to expect athletic, virtuosic, meaningful movement combined with beautiful music and striking costumes. However, since this year’s work is titled “The Co-Conspirator,” this fundraiser promises to be an evening full of surprises. You won’t want to miss it. Individual tickets are $30 and can be bought at the door or in advance. Need a table for your group of eight? The $300 tables sell out every year, so buy now. Can’t attend? Please consider buying raffle tickets. One raffle ticket is $3.00 or you can buy two for $5.00. You do not have to be present to win.

Like all good fables from childhood, they whisper on a subconscious level of riddles and ravens. Artists' Reception: Thursday, December 1, 6-8 pm

Nov 22-Dec 30 New Video, New Europe: A Survey of Eastern European Video at Arthouse

Arthouse at the Jones Center, 700 Congress Avenue

(512) 453-5312
www.arthousetexas.org

Arthouse at the Jones Center is pleased to present New Video, New Europe: A Survey of Eastern European Video, curated by Hamza Walker, Education Director at The Renaissance Society of the University of Chicago. New Video, New Europe features recent work by over three dozen artists from sixteen Eastern European countries stretching from the Baltic through the Balkans. Despite its uneven development throughout Eastern Europe, video has become a staple of contemporary art practice -- from countries with video traditions dating back to the late 1960s and early 1970s (Hungary, Poland, Croatia) to those with scenes that blossomed in the 1980s (Slovenia), to relatively new but nonetheless robust scenes (Romania, Estonia, Latvia). The work reflects a variety of genres and approaches - documentary, diaristic, ethnographic, experimental - and is broken up into a series of discrete programs ranging in length from 45 to 105 minutes. Some programs cannot fail to reflect a specific region, such as the 45-minute grouping of works addressing the residual resonance of war and ethnic tensions in the former Yugoslavia. Other programs unwittingly expose quirky national character traits such as an obsession with death apparently peculiar to Estonia. And still others reveal tendencies endemic to the entire region such as a self-deprecating humor symptomatic of anxieties about joining the European Union.

Courtesy, Service, Protection details the history of the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). Seventy years ago, the Texas Legislature created the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) by combining the legendary Texas Rangers with the recently-created Highway Patrol. During its long history, the Department has strived to live up to its motto: "Courtesy, Service, Protection." These core values have guided the DPS for seven decades as it has expanded from highways to helicopters, from driver licenses to DNA labs, and from safety education to S.W.A.T. teams. This exhibit tells the story of the Department through pictures, stories, and artifacts. Visitors can view historic uniforms, equipment, and even a vintage highway patrol motorcycle from the 1930s.
