Feb 16-Mar 25 Angela Fraleigh: there i still my thirst
Women & Their Work, 1710 Lavaca
(512) 477-1064
www.womenandtheirwork.org
Women & Their Work is pleased to present Houston artist, Angela Fraleigh in her solo exhibit titled “there i still my thirst”. Fraleigh creates large-scale, sumptuously painted oils on panel in which she combines the painting styles of abstraction and figuration. Fraleigh states that through her paintings she is “questioning the social constructs of beauty, class, gender and role play”. Violent and seductive, threatening and unpredictable, her use of paint complicates the images that are drawn from dramatic moments in literature leaving us unsure if the figures are being birthed or eaten away. The physicality of the rich colorful paint both corrupts and obscures the narrative in Fraleigh’s work. Essayist, Claire Barliant, Associate Editor, Artforum, brilliantly discusses the themes of beauty and the male gaze in Fraleigh’s work. Fraleigh has a M.F.A. in painting and printmaking from Yale University School of Art, and B.F.A. from Boston University (Cum Laude). She has had solo exhibitions in Texas. She has also been in group exhibits in Florida, California, New York, Conn., and Texas. Fraleigh received the Eliza Randall Prize, 2004-05 at the Glassell School of Art MFAH, Houston, TX. and was a Core Fellow 2003-2005 at the Glassell School of Art MFAH, Houston, TX. Her work is in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX., and several corporate collections. Opening Reception: Thursday, February 16, 7:00 -9:00 p.m.

"The secret to humor is surprise." ~ Aristotle, Greek philosopher. Surprises and laughs abound in this hit tale of greed, love and revolution! A depletion of the earth's water supply leads to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The privilege to pee is regulated by a single, malevolent corporation, "Urine Good Company", which forces the poor citizens to pay ever-escalating fees. With musical numbers that borrow shamelessly from West Side Story and other Broadway classics, Urinetown is an intelligent musical that simultaneously pokes hilarious fun at and pays homage to Broadway.
Jan 20-Mar 19 RED: Alberto Castro Leñero
Mexic-Arte Museum, 419 Congress
(512) 480-9373
www.mexic-artemuseum.org
Mexic-Arte Museum presents former illustrator Alberto Castro Leñero. The exhibit’s title refers to the Spanish word for “net.” The retrospective exhibition is comprised of 26 abstract sculptures and paintings. His works embrace the essence of the human form within its context. The artist’s emotionally-charged style demonstrates the interplay of color, texture, structure, anatomy, design and expression. Born in 1951 in Mexico City, Castro Leñero attended the National Fine Arts School of the National and Autonomous University of Mexico in 1971 studying graphic communications and visual arts. While still developing his artistic vision, he completed his studies in painting at the Academia delle Belle Arti de Bologna. He served as Professor of Visual Experimentation (1982-87) in the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas from UNAM. He is a former member of the National System of Creators of CONACULTA. His work has been shown in more than 20 solo and group shows throughout the world. He has worked as an illustrator in various cultural and educational publications such as Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes. Today, scholars have noted his artistic characteristics similar to the German Expressionism Movement pioneered by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch. Opening Reception: Friday, January 20, 2006.
Jan 20-Mar 19 José Clemente Orozco: Graphic Work
Mexic-Arte Museum, 419 Congress
(512) 480-9373
www.mexic-artemuseum.org
Mexic-Arte Museum presents muralist José Clemente Orozco. The exhibition is a showcase of the legendary 20th Century muralist’s lithographs and etchings produced between the 1920s and 1940s. As one of the three major Mexican muralists famously known as ‘Los Tres Grandes’, Orozco provides a clear glimpse into the grim realities of social illness and the failings of humanity brought upon by the Mexican Revolution. The works display his technical achievements and reveal the artist's unique perspective, which differed from the other great muralists. Orozco dedicated three well-defined periods to this art: 1928-1930, 1935, and 1944, which correspond to his time in New York, Coyoacán, and his home in Ignacio Mariscal in Mexico City. While still respecting his unique style, the artist used the lithographic stone surface and the design itself to create a binary system of colors capturing dazzling whites and surprising effects of light and shade. Unlike Diego Rivera’s optimism and vision of an idealized Mexican history, Orozco had no qualms about depicting social and historical developments in harsh, darkened tones. Of the three muralists, he remained mostly in Mexico during the revolutionary upheavals of 1910-20. The artist was a reserved pessimist who refused to attach himself to a particular class, a movement, or a school. He rejected both a Eurocentric optic and a romanticized indigenismo. His work reflects the mestizaje of the Americas—a hybridity produced by the collision of Native, European and African cultures. Opening Reception: Friday, January 20, 2006.
Jan 21-Mar 12 The Gospel of Lead: Dario Robleto and Jeremy Blake
Arthouse at the Jones Center, 700 Congress Avenue
(512) 453-5312
www.arthousetexas.org
Origins of The Gospel of Lead Dario Robleto is a San Antonio-based artist who has received impressive national attention. He recently received the first place award for Best Show in a Commercial Gallery, Nationally from the International Association of Art Critics and was included in the 2004 Whitney Biennial. After a well received public talk at Arthouse in February 2004, Arthouse Adjunct Curator, Regine Basha presented Robleto with the opportunity to invite another artist with whom to show. Rather than choosing someone he already knew personally, Robleto seized this occasion to invite an artist he did not know, but whose work he much admired -- Los Angeles-based artist Jeremy Blake, who accepted the invitation. The pairing of Robleto and Blake is particularly resonant as the two artists’ work shares affinities in their investigation of pop mythology, historical phenomenon and memory. While Blake has collaborated in the past, most notably with director P.T. Anderson on the feature film Punch Drunk Love, and the musician Beck, this will be his first collaboration with another visual artist.

Jan 31-Aug 5 The Image Wrought: Historical Photographic Approaches in the Digital Age
Harry Ransom Center, 21st & Guadalupe
(512) 471-8949
www.hrc.utexas.edu
Since the first digital camera debuted over twenty years ago, the medium of photography has undergone a dramatic revolution. For virtually all popular and professional purposes, the computer has supplanted the darkroom in the 21st century. In sharp contrast to the almost universal embrace of this new technology is a growing contingent of photographers who prefer revisiting 19th-century photographic approaches. Photographers whose aesthetic goals cannot be met through the seamless resolution of the pixel are returning with increasing frequency to such archaic processes as the daguerreotype, virtually extinct by 1860, and using them to reintroduce the hand of the artist to photography. The resulting works are unique in their originality. In a departure from other exhibitions of "alternative process" photography, the Harry Ransom Center's expansive photographic collections provide a singular opportunity to present these contemporary images alongside vintage examples of their 19th-century predecessors. Comprised of about 80 objects (including daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, and other historical treatments and formats), the exhibition will provide a thorough examination of this important movement in the history of photography.
Jan 31-Aug 5 Technologies of Writing
Harry Ransom Center, 21st & Guadalupe
(512) 471-8949
www.hrc.utexas.edu
Writing is perhaps man's greatest invention. Not even the development of language is comparable, for all species have language. But writing is what enables language to be copied and stored. Writing is memory. It is what makes us human. If by "writing" we mean the ability to inscribe on some surface our human response to the world around us, then the origins of writing go back 20,000 years. If by "writing" we mean a codified system of inscribed signs, then it is 6,000 years old. Perhaps the most astonishing thing about writing is that its development is ongoing, constantly responsive to technological innovation. The exhibition, "Technologies of Writing," will document the evolution of writing. It has not always been clear whether the technological innovations in writing caused social change or whether new social necessities demanded speeded-up modes of writing, but what is clear is that no significant alteration of the human condition has occurred without a corresponding change in how writing is produced, stored, or reproduced. All the significant technological breakthroughs of the century just ended—the invention of the typewriter, the xerographic copier, the fax machine, the personal computer—altered writing by accelerating the reproducibility of writing. Today, writing, like money, need not assume a material form at all but can be instantly sent and received as structured electronic pulses, even as the machinery of doing so retains the nomenclature of earlier technologies—web pages and the act of scrolling are obvious examples, but even boot up may recall the old-fashioned need to trim a quill before starting to write. The exhibition will feature a wide range of objects, from cuneiform tablets to electronic texts, and will offer visitors a chance to record their own thoughts about writing using a number of different writing technologies.

Mar 3-Apr 14 The Ten Courts of the Kings of Hell: Vietnam Past & Present
Fielding Lecht Gallery, 708 Congress
(512) 476-0044
www.fieldinglecht.com
Fielding Lecht Gallery presents "The Ten Courts of the Kings of Hell: Vietnam Past and Present", an exhibition curated by British artist Simon Redington and art director Suzanne Lecht. The exhibition is composed of ten artists from Hanoi, each portraying a unique and intensely personal expression of the dynamics of life in Vietnam today. The core of the exhibition is an installation by British artist, Simon Redington. A culmination of 6 years of research with Vietnamese artists and Buddhist scholars, Simon has produced a portfolio of ten etchings based on Buddhist and Oriental beliefs concerning The Circle of Life- the law of causality. The addition of quotes from Dante's Inferno brings these traditional ideas into a western context that has surprisingly modern relevance. The other artists work provides an interesting interplay of the forces of the past imposed upon life in the present. The threads of continuity are visible in some works, heavily veiled in others. Opening Reception: Friday, March 3, 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. Conversation with Suzanne Lecht, Simon Redinton and Ding Cong Dat, March 3 at 7:00 p.m.

Lance Letscher "is not the only artist using cast-off books and papers but he is one of the very few whose modernity supersedes the nostalgia of old materials without sacrificing their elegiac power. Every appropriation of derelict scraps declares a sharp contemporary wit. but in Mr. Letscher's hands, the declaration rises to a threnody for lives that left no monument, only accumulations of ephemera poised for dispersion. ...[Mr. Letscher's work] is a roller coaster ride of mood shifts, from playfulness to solemnity. ...An exquisite color sense and empathy with his materials create coherence among dissimilar design motifs. These are the twin axes on which Mr. Letscher's madcap poetry revolves." - Maureen Mullarkey, New York Sun Opening Reception: April 8, 1:00 p.m.

Scottish Rite Children’s Theatre presents an original musical for youth, courtesy of Texas State University. Students of the theatre department tell the story of Candlestein, a young raccoon trying to overcome an incident in his childhood that turned his fur white! Candlestein struggles with his emotions, triumphing in the end with help from his friends in the forest. With an underlying message of kindness toward animals, this thought-provoking musical is peppered with lively songs and will appeal to elementary school-aged students. Dr. Charles Pascoe, Director of the Children's Theatre program at Texas State, authored both the story and the musical score for this clever production. Tickets are available by calling 512-472-KIDO (5436). Our on-site box office at 207 W. 18th Street is open Monday - Friday from 12 noon to 6:00 P.M. for both phone and walk-up sales. Arthouse at the Jones Center, 700 Congress Avenue
(512) 453-5312
www.arthousetexas.org
Transforming the notions of the everyday into astonishing and unexpected works of art is the focus of the three artists Francesca Fuchs, Thomas Glassford, and Katrina Moorhead participating in the exhibition Xtra-Ordinary. Employing very different media, Fuchs – painting, Glassford – industrially- manufactured products and Moorhead - flowers, they each completely alter our views of the commonplace. Fuchs heroically scaled wall paintings depict a most intimate and universal moment, a baby breast feeding, and instill a startling power into this very personal activity. Glassford’s use of fluorescent tubes and plastic plates and rods transforms these quotidian objects into commanding sculptures that recall the minimalism of the 1960s as well as the contemporary vernacular. Moorhead’s work addresses the true poetry of the mundane by creating installations of appropriated graffiti text created with thousands of simple white carnations. For the exhibition at Arthouse, both Fuchs and Moorhead will install site-specific works in the gallery spaces.

If you choose to buy your tickets in-person at the Frank Erwin Center or an H-E-B ticket center, you will need to get a wristband BEFORE Saturday. Wristband distribution is a system that provides customers a place in line for the opportunity to purchase tickets on the first day of ticket sales. The wristband system is designed to provide convenience as well as efficient and equitable ticket purchasing opportunities for ticket buyers.
