The DAA helps lead the implementation of the Downtown Retail Redevelopment Strategy, an initiative to cultivate a mix of local, regional and national retailers downtown. We do this by creating a healthy retail environment, recruiting new retailers and helping existing retailers to strengthen their business operations.
We recruit local and regional retailers to downtown, both through proactive outreach and by facilitating ongoing negotiations among property owners and potential tenants. We also conduct retail psychographic research to profile downtown shoppers and GIS mapping of the area’s first-floor retail space to help potential tenants see the value of locating here.
Healthy Retail Environment
Everything we do at the DAA nurtures the downtown retail environment in some way. Good transportation gives people easier access to downtown retail. Keeping downtown clean and safe makes shoppers feel welcome. Arts and parks programs encourage people to discover new places.
Specifically, our greatest focus areas are Congress Avenue and East Sixth Street. We are unifying Congress Avenue though tree lighting and more vibrant public plazas, and helping market it as an official shopping district. Additionally, we hope to protect this historic nature of the East Sixth Street and diversify the retail mix to add to an already vibrant nightlife.
We help downtown retailers strengthen their operations by:
- Advocating for changes like the ordinance allowing temporary pop-up shops
- Providing education on topics ranging from marketing to merchandising
- Offering merchandising and marketing expertise
